The front page of a newspaper contains the most important news stories of the day in the country it is circulated in. Often, it will tease the other interesting stories that are contained inside the edition.
When a person is front-page news, it means that they are the topic of major interest or are very popular. This could be because of a celebrity, sports star, politician or event that has happened.
In 2014, three Jane Does who were allegedly sex trafficked as minors sued Backpage in federal court, claiming that their traffickers used the site to advertise them for sex. The district court ruled that Backpage facilitated the sex trafficking and failed to protect their privacy. The court of appeals ruled that Backpage was acting in “traditional publisher functions” regarding third-party content and thus was protected by CDA Section 230.
In June 2017, three Jane Does re-filed their lawsuit against Backpage, alleging that the website had substantially changed the ads related to them. The case is ongoing. Fitzgibbon Media, a public relations firm hired by Fair Girls and the NCMEC, has created a multimedia campaign to support the Jane Does’ fight against Backpage.
