How to Write a News Update

A news update is an article that recaps the latest happenings in a particular area, event, or company. Businesses may create these updates to inform employees about important events, share new projects, or announce a company milestone. They can also serve as a marketing tool by making it easier to share and spread information about their brand to the public.

Writers must keep in mind that news articles are intended to convey facts and not opinions. They should avoid using words or phrases that could be perceived as supportive of a certain position or negative toward another perspective. This is especially true of a news piece that discusses political or social issues.

Start your news article with a strong lead that grabs readers’ attention by providing the most important details. This is known as the “nut graph” and should include the answers to who, what, when, where, why, and how (5Ws and 1H). Include a photo or graphic in your nut graph to add visual appeal and draw the reader’s eye.

The body of your news article should provide a deeper explanation of the topic by including expert quotes and data. Remember to always credit the source of this information in order to maintain journalistic integrity. A good news article will also contain a conclusion that restates the leading statement and provides a call to action.

When you are done writing your news article, have someone else read it to make sure the content is accurate and the information is easy to understand. It’s a great idea to run it by a senior member of the department to receive feedback and see if they have any additional insights.
