Climate change continues to be a crucial issue around the world this year, with recent developments attracting global attention. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveals that global temperatures have increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial era. This shows the need to immediately make changes to avoid more severe impacts. In the past decade, various countries have announced net-zero targets, including China, the United States and the European Union. China is committed to reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030 and net-zero by 2060. Meanwhile, the United States, under the Biden administration, has promised a 50-52% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. At the international level, the COP28 meeting which will take place in Dubai is expected to produce concrete agreements to tackle climate change. Here, countries are expected to renew their commitments regarding emission reduction and collaborate on renewable energy technologies. Reports from environmental organizations show that time is running out to act, with the threat from extreme weather such as storms, drought and bushfires increasing. In some areas, residents are starting to feel the real impacts of climate change. Previously fertile areas are now experiencing a decline in agricultural yields due to changes in weather patterns. Additionally, rising sea levels threaten thousands of islands and coastal cities. Data from NASA shows that more than 1.5 million people are expected to be displaced due to sea level rise by 2050. On the other hand, initiatives to promote renewable energy are increasing. Many countries are now investing in solar and wind technology, with some countries such as Germany and Denmark dominating in renewable energy production. Solar energy is expected to become a major source in the next decade, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Policy changes also occurred in the industrial sector. Many companies, including tech giants like Microsoft and Apple, have committed to becoming carbon-neutral in the near future. They introduced programs to reduce their carbon footprint and invested in environmental restoration projects. Civil society is also playing a role in this issue, with increasing awareness of the importance of sustainability. Movements such as “Fridays for Future” spearheaded by Greta Thunberg, urge concrete action to prevent further environmental damage. Public participation in environmental actions is increasing, showing that the younger generation really cares about the future of the planet. With the latest news and developments on the issue of climate change, it is clear that global attention to this crisis is becoming increasingly urgent. Commitment from governments, companies and individuals is needed to create significant and sustainable change for a better future for the planet.
