The latest natural disasters to shake the world represent a major challenge for humanity. In October 2023, the world was shocked by an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale which rocked the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This earthquake occurred at 14:36 WIB, was centered at a depth of 10 km and was located near the city of Padang. Since then, more than 500 aftershocks have been reported, causing fears of a potential tsunami that could hit coastal areas. Within a few days after the earthquake, a SAR team was deployed to carry out search and rescue. It is estimated that thousands of local residents were trapped under the rubble of buildings, and at least 200 people were reported dead. This incident highlights the importance of early warning systems and community preparedness for natural disasters. Inadequate infrastructure in several areas is a factor causing the high number of damages. Furthermore, in other parts of the world, Tropical Storm Kieran flooded the southern region of the United States. This storm brought strong winds of up to 150 km/h and heavy rain which caused flooding in many cities, including New Orleans and Houston. Authorities issued an evacuation warning, but many residents were trapped by the fast-coming floodwaters. Residents tried to secure their belongings, while battling rising waters. The impact of this disaster was very significant, with thousands of houses submerged and roads cut off. Apart from that, Kieran also caused disruption to public service systems, including electricity and communications. Economic losses from these storms are estimated to be in the billions of dollars, highlighting the importance of effective disaster mitigation plans. Not far from there, a national park in Australia experienced severe forest fires that consumed thousands of hectares of land. These fires are driven by extreme temperatures due to climate change, resulting in untold destruction of natural habitats and animal habitats. Environmental experts warn that the sustainability of the existing ecosystem is threatened, and rehabilitation efforts may take years. People globally also show solidarity by providing assistance to disaster victims through various platforms. This humanitarian action reflects how natural disasters can bring together people from various backgrounds to provide support to those affected. On social media, fundraising campaigns have been carried out to help with the basic needs of the victims of this disaster, from food to temporary shelter. Overall, recent natural disasters offer valuable lessons about resilience and the need for better mitigation strategies. As disasters continue to strike, collaboration between governments, NGOs and civil society becomes increasingly important in addressing these devastating impacts, as well as strengthening the capacity to adapt to increasingly extreme climate change.
